They are so named because of the number of times the tape is folded over onto itself. If you make your own, there’s no limit to the colors and patterns you can use.īias tape typically comes in two different types: single fold and double fold. You can buy bias tape premade in a wide variety of colors, or you can make your own very easily with a straight edge and a rotary cutter. Woven fabric typically doesn’t have any stretch (unless it contains a stretchy fiber like spandex), but it will stretch some on the diagonal.īias binding is not super stretchy like a knit, but has enough give to help it lay flat around curves. It is a long, narrow strip of woven fabric that is cut “on the bias,” meaning it’s cut at a 45-degree angle from the grain of the fabric. It’s easy to sew with and will save you loads of time while sewing your dresses. My favorite way to finish off the raw edges of the armholes is to use pre-packaged double-fold bias tape. Also, don’t ever forget that there are ribbons in these dresses. It’s pretty common for people to make them from embroidered or vintage pillowcases. Also, did you know they are called pillowcase dresses because they are often made from actual pillowcases? That’s why the width of the fabric is the same for each size of the dress. I did the math and created this size chart to use when you sew a pillowcase dress. When I first began making these dresses, I did the “math” for each pillowcase dress as I made them, depending on who I was making it for and how old they were. I have seen some beautiful ones made from vintage lace pillowcases. You can absolutely make a pillowcase dress from an old pillowcase. Pillowcase dresses are designed to be a “one size fits all dress” since you can easily adjust the sizing by tightening or loosening the ribbon at the neckline. To make one, you would cut off the two top corners of the pillowcase, create a casing at the neckline for a ribbon, and that’s it-an easy summer dress.
